Sci-Fi Planet Maker
Sci-Fi Planet Generator
Generate procedurally created celestial bodies for your TTRPG campaigns, sci-fi writing, or worldbuilding projects.
Whether you are writing a sci-fi novel, designing a custom Starfield mod, or running a Mothership TTRPG campaign, worldbuilding is hard work. Staring at a blank page trying to invent a completely new ecosystem can grind your creativity to a halt.
Our Sci-Fi Planet Maker instantly generates a baseline planetary profile. By providing you with a name, biome, and harsh environmental variables, you can immediately start focusing on the story rather than the astrophysics.
How to Build a Believable Planet
A believable planet relies on logical consistency. If our generator hands you a "Desert" planet with a surface temperature of -150°C, that is not a mistake—that is a cold desert, much like Mars or Antarctica.
Take the generated variables and ask yourself why they exist. If a planet has a toxic ammonia atmosphere but a dense jungle biome, the flora must have evolved to breathe ammonia instead of carbon dioxide. This single generated detail instantly creates a unique, alien aesthetic for your world.
Gravity and Atmospheric Pressure
Gravity is the silent killer in sci-fi worldbuilding. It dictates the entire shape of the world and the creatures that live on it.
- Low Gravity (0.1G - 0.7G): Mountains can grow impossibly tall without collapsing under their own weight. Native creatures will likely be thin, spindly, and capable of massive leaps or flight.
- High Gravity (1.5G - 3.0G): The landscape will be flat and heavily eroded. Native lifeforms will be short, dense, and heavily muscled with multiple legs to distribute their immense weight.
Biome and Flora Concepts
While Earth features a massive variety of biomes, most sci-fi tropes lean towards single-biome planets (like Tatooine or Hoth).
Our generator provides a primary classification (e.g., Ice World, Lava World). Use the "Notable Feature" generation to add flavor to this classification. A standard Ice World is boring, but an Ice World with a subterranean ocean hiding massive leviathans (like Europa) is an adventure waiting to happen.
Generating Naming Conventions
Coming up with realistic-sounding planet names is difficult. Our generator uses a mix of Greek/Latin prefixes (often used by real-world astronomers) and standard classification suffixes.
If the generator gives you "Zion Secundus", the word "Secundus" implies it is the second planet from its host star. You can use these suffixes to instantly flesh out the rest of the solar system in your lore without having to generate them all manually.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does 'G' mean in gravity measurements?
1.0 G is equal to Earth's gravity. A planet with 2.0 G would feel twice as heavy, requiring immense strength just to stand up. A planet with 0.5 G would allow you to jump twice as high.
Can a Gas Giant have a surface temperature?
Gas Giants do not have a solid surface in the traditional sense, but they do have an upper atmosphere temperature. As you descend, the pressure and temperature increase exponentially until the gas becomes a liquid.
Are these planets usable in commercial projects?
Yes! All names and concepts generated by this tool are completely royalty-free and can be used in your novels, indie games, or tabletop campaigns.
