Whether you are rolling a charismatic Warlock in Dungeons & Dragons or building a fiery Paladin in Baldur's Gate 3, your Tiefling's name tells a story of their heritage and how they interact with a prejudiced world. Our Tiefling Name Generator strictly adheres to D&D lore, providing you with both ancient Infernal names and human-adopted Virtue names.

By algorithmically selecting from the official D&D 5e naming tables, this tool ensures that your character fits perfectly into the Forgotten Realms. If you're building a multi-racial adventuring party, be sure to also check out our Elf Name Generator and Halfling Name Generator.

How to Generate the Perfect Tiefling Name

Tiefling naming conventions are unique among D&D races because their names are often a direct reflection of their worldview.

Step 1: Select Naming Tradition

Use the dropdown menu to decide if your Tiefling embraces their fiendish heritage (Infernal) or has adopted a concept to define themselves (Virtue).

Step 2: Select a Gender

For Infernal names, choose a gender to generate 5 culturally accurate names. Note that if you selected Virtue, the buttons will default to gender-neutral, as concepts do not have genders.

Virtue Names vs. Infernal Names

In the lore of the Forgotten Realms, Tieflings generally fall into two broad naming categories based on how they were raised and how they view themselves.

  • Infernal Names: These names are passed down through generations of Tieflings, retaining the harsh, guttural sounds of the Infernal language (e.g., Damakos, Kallista, Morthos). Tieflings with these names either take pride in their heritage or grew up in isolated Tiefling communities.
  • Virtue Names: Many younger Tieflings, especially those raised among humans or looking to shed the stigma of their demonic bloodline, reject their Infernal name. Instead, they choose a word that represents a concept they strive for or struggle against. Examples include Despair, Hope, Art, and Chant.

Tiefling Naming Conventions in Baldur's Gate 3

If you have played Baldur's Gate 3, you have undoubtedly encountered the Tiefling refugees at the Emerald Grove. Larian Studios did a masterful job of adhering to D&D 5e lore for these characters.

Most of the refugees use traditional Infernal names—Zevlor, Dammon, Alfira, and Rolan. However, a keen ear will spot a few Virtue names among the cast, subtly hinting at those characters' backstories and personal philosophies before you even speak to them. You can use our generator to perfectly match the naming style of the NPCs in the game.

Meaning Behind Infernal Surnames

You may have noticed that our generator does not output a last name. This is completely intentional and lore-accurate. Tieflings almost never have surnames.

Due to the prejudice they face, Tieflings are frequently abandoned as children or live in poverty on the fringes of society. Without a noble house or a long-standing familial legacy to uphold, the concept of a surname is meaningless to them. A Tiefling relies solely on their first name and the reputation they carve out for themselves with their own two hands.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tiefling Names

Why don't Tieflings have last names?

Due to their fiendish heritage, Tieflings are often abandoned or orphaned, meaning they rarely have a family name to pass down. Instead, they rely solely on their first name and the reputation they build for themselves.

What is a Virtue name?

Many younger Tieflings reject their Infernal heritage and instead choose an English word that represents a concept they strive for, such as "Hope", "Despair", "Reverence", or "Chant". This becomes their chosen name.

Are Baldur's Gate 3 names different from D&D 5e?

No! Baldur's Gate 3 strictly follows Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition lore. The Tiefling refugees you meet in the Grove (like Zevlor, Dammon, or Alfira) all use classic Infernal naming structures.
