Terraria NPC Happiness Calculator
Since the Journey's End (1.4) update, building a single massive "NPC Hotel" is no longer the optimal way to play Terraria. The introduction of the Happiness system forces players to strategically scatter their towns across the map to unlock the incredibly useful Pylon fast-travel network.
Our Terraria NPC Happiness Calculator takes the guesswork out of town planning. By analyzing biomes and neighbor preferences, you can easily figure out how to maximize your discounts and unlock every Pylon in the game.
How NPC Happiness Works in 1.4
Every NPC in Terraria now acts like a critic. Their happiness directly influences the prices of the items they sell and the amount of money they pay you for your loot. Happiness is determined by three main factors:
- Crowding: NPCs want their personal space. If they have more than two neighbors within 25 blocks, their happiness drops drastically. Having 1 or 2 neighbors grants a "Solitude Bonus".
- Biome Preference: Every NPC has a biome they love and a biome they hate. For example, the Arms Dealer loves the Desert but absolutely hates the Snow biome.
- Neighbor Preference: NPCs have distinct personalities. The Nurse loves being near the Arms Dealer, but she hates the Zoologist. Grouping compatible NPCs together is key.
Best Biome and Neighbor Combinations
To get you started on your Pylon network, here are a few of the most reliable and highly-optimized NPC pairings:
- The Desert Duo: Arms Dealer + Nurse in the Desert. The Arms Dealer loves the Nurse and loves the Desert. He will instantly sell you the Desert Pylon and give massive discounts on bullets.
- The Underground Engineers: Goblin Tinkerer + Mechanic in the Underground/Caverns. The Tinkerer loves the Mechanic and loves the Underground. This is essential for getting cheap reforges!
- The Jungle Mystics: Dryad + Witch Doctor + Painter in the Jungle. A perfect trio that will unlock the Jungle Pylon effortlessly.
Unlocking the Pylon Network
Pylons are magical crystals that allow you to instantly teleport between towns. To buy a Pylon, the vendor must have an internal happiness modifier of roughly 0.85 (85% of standard prices) or lower.
The easiest formula to guarantee a Pylon is: Solitude Bonus (1-2 neighbors) + Loved Biome + Loved/Liked Neighbor. Once you buy the Pylon and place it, the NPCs don't technically need to stay perfectly happy for it to work, though keeping them happy ensures cheaper shop prices.
Calculating Shop Discounts
Happiness is tracked as a multiplier. A multiplier of 1.0 means standard prices. A multiplier of 0.75 means a 25% discount (this is the absolute maximum discount you can achieve). A multiplier of 1.5 means a 50% price increase (the maximum penalty).
Always ensure your Goblin Tinkerer is at maximum happiness before reforging high-end accessories, as reforging costs are directly tied to his shop multiplier. A 25% discount on late-game reforging will save you dozens of Platinum coins!
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I unlock a Pylon in Terraria?
To unlock a biome Pylon, an NPC must be sufficiently happy (usually a price multiplier of 85% or lower). The easiest way to achieve this is to house them in their loved biome with a neighbor they love, and ensure they are not crowded.
What is the maximum shop discount?
The maximum discount an NPC can give is 75% of their original prices (a 0.75x multiplier). Conversely, if an NPC is completely miserable, their prices can increase up to 150% (a 1.5x multiplier).
What counts as a neighbor?
A neighbor is another NPC whose housing banner is located within 25 blocks of the target NPC's housing banner. Having more than two neighbors within this radius triggers a crowding penalty.
